Pablo, Competition for a sculpture, Cantalao, Chile

This sculpture/architecture competition in tribute to the chilean poet Pablo Neruda proposes a specific position. In front of the ocean, alon, 37 to 21 meter-high (from initial position to final position), oriented according to the main winds and streets, this sculpture embodies Heidegger’s concept of “dasein” (litterally: “being here”).

It referes to a local presence, with a strong involvement to the surrounding landscape. But at the same time, it also evolves and, like the poet, always thinks further. By bending under its own weight, this steel stick transforms the extent of its presence. Little by little, it moves from “having” to “being”, from “mass” to “gravity”. In a word, just like artpieces overcome the character of the artist who made them.
